Namring is one of the oldest gardens in Darjeeling, founded in 1863 when British settlers began planting high-quality Chinese shrubs grown from seed. Today it is a huge plantation that covers 1,068 hectares of which 450 are under tea cultivation and 85% irrigated with water from Tiger Hill springs. A few years ago the farm was uprooted and replanted with the highest quality AV2 varietal. 1,400 people work in it and 10,000 people live on the same farm. Given the importance of education for management, it finances half a dozen primary and secondary schools where the workers’ children study Nepali and English. The size of the farm is such that it also has an institute half-financed with the Indian State. This is one of the few gardens that covers the “lower” and “upper” sections, the latter being between 1,500 and 2,100 meters above sea level. This is where the most extraordinary, aromatic and elegant teas are produced. Very floral notes and with the characteristic “muscatel flavor”, unique in the best Darjeelings.
